The name ‘cassowary’ is derived from two Papuan words, ‘kasu’ and ‘wari’, meaning ‘horned head’. This refers to the bird's helmet-like casque, which it uses to push through dense undergrowth.

They also defend themselves with dagger-like claws, delivering formidable kicks with their muscular legs!

The Southern Cassowary makes a deep, low-frequency ‘booming’ sound to communicate, especially during mating season or when asserting their territory.

Scientists believe they use their casque to amplify these rumbling calls, allowing them to be heard through dense forests in the wild!
