Animals We Love: Indian Gharials
The Indian gharial is related to the crocodilians. A critically endangered species, it used to occur in the rivers of Pakistan and Myanmar. Today, it is estimated that fewer than 200 Indian gharials are left in the wild, mostly in India, and a small number in Nepal and Bangladesh. River Wonders is proud to house the extremely rare and unique Indian gharial.
Animals We Love: Stingrays
The giant freshwater stingray is the largest freshwater fish in the world. Very little is know about this elusive fish which was described by scientists only recently, in 1990. This giant can be found mainly in the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems. The Mekong River Exhibit at River Wonders is home to three giant freshwater stingrays.
Amazon Flooded Forest's Famous Five
For six months every year, seasonal rains cause an enormous rise in the water level of the Amazon Basin. The water overflows, submerging the forest by over 10 metres. This creates a water wonderland that attracts many aquatic animals from the Amazon River to visit, feed, play and breed.
