Dragons and mythical beasts come alive at Singapore Zoo

14 NOV 2018
Singapore Zoo now has dragons. Not just Komodo dragons, but dragons of the flying, fire-breathing variety. A unique, life-like animatronic collection of dragons and mythical beasts awaits in the newly installed Valley of Myths. From 17 Nov to 31 Dec 2018, catch perennial favourites like the Unicorn, Griffin and Dragon amongst the lesser known but equally intriguing Ninki Nanka from West African folklore and Baku from Japanese legends in Singapore Zoo.

Students from Zhangde Primary School get up close with the Naga, a
mythical beast inspired by snakes like the king cobra. The Naga is one
of 17 animatronic mythical beasts featured in Singapore Zoo’s newly installed Valley of Myths, as part of the year-end Dragons & Beasts campaign.

HBO’s GAME OF THRONES’ Ice Dragon, Viserion, stands tall as the Night King and his White Walkers assume an imposing stance. This is the first time a 3D replica of Viserion is on display. The Night King and White Walkers will be making special appearances in Singapore Zoo on 17, 18, 24 and 25 November 2018.

Embark on the Creature Researcher Trail in Singapore Zoo to distinguish between fact and fiction. The immersive self-guided trail draws parallels to the parks’ living collection. Learn about the surprising origins of these mythical creatures and how they were inspired by the discovery of animals like lizards, rhinos and tapirs, and visit their exhibits to see the real-life embodiment of the mythical creatures.

Beyond the physical life-like displays, Dragons and Beasts offers guests an engaging experience via games and interactive sessions. Take on the Who inspired who? game challenge to discover how the unbelievable powers of mythical beasts were influenced by equally amazing adaptations of living animals. Complete all three challenges to redeem an exclusive collectible pin. Visitors will also have the opportunity meet a real-life dragon in the form of Singapore Zoo’s friendly bearded dragons at special interactive sessions.

Ms May Lok, Director of Education, Wildlife Reserves Singapore, said, “The tagline for this year’s campaign is ‘Where inspiration meets reality’ because these mythical beasts prominent in popular culture were inspired by real-life animals, many of which are in our living collection. By linking these mythical beasts to the zoo’s animals, we hope to showcase how amazing living, breathing animals truly are and in turn instil a deeper sense of appreciation for wildlife.”

Besides the Valley of Myths, a chilling invasion from beyond the wall has descended upon Singapore Zoo. In collaboration with HBO Asia, Singapore Zoo will for the first time ever, display a 3D replica of Viserion, the Night King’s Ice Dragon from the hit HBO Original series GAME OF THRONES. Stream the entire series on HBO GO (https://www.hbogoasia.sg).  The Night King himself and his White Walkers will be making special appearances on 17, 18, 24 and 25 November 2018.

Mythical beast-themed activities happen weekends of 17 Nov to 31 Dec 2018, and on Christmas Day. From 17 Nov to 31 Dec 2018, local residents also enjoy greater savings online—receive 45 per cent off for the second admission ticket to Singapore Zoo with every paying adult. Terms and conditions apply.

Students from Zhangde Primary School embark on the Creature Researcher Trail and come across the mythical creature known as the Baku from Japanese folklore, inspired by Singapore Zoo’s Malayan tapir. The self-guided trail promises a fun-filled adventure as you learn about how the mythical beasts were inspired by real-life animals in Singapore Zoo.

Students from Zhangde Primary School gawk in awe as the legendary Eastern dragon towers above them. It is believed that early discoveries of long-necked dinosaurs led to the dragon myth.
