Scurry down to Singapore's wildlife parks to welcome the Year of the Rat

21 JAN 2020
The rats rejoiced today at Singapore’s wildlife parks, where three species of larger-than-life rodents enjoyed early festive surprises ahead of the Lunar New Year.

Capybaras are the world’s largest rodent. Visitors will be able to see them unveiling Lunar New Year wishes and get to feed them at the Once Upon a River presentation at River Safari.

Night Safari’s star rat is the northern Luzon giant cloud rat, a large rodent with a distinct grey coat. Visitors can catch these nocturnal critters at Night Safari's Leopard Trail.

The gentle and captivating semi-aquatic capybara, also known as the largest living rodent in the world, unveiled a couplet with wishes for the Year of the Rat at River Safari. These lovable South American creatures with their nonchalant expressions are crowd favourites at the park’s Once Upon a River presentation and will certainly charm audiences when they unfurl the season’s salutations.

Endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines, the Luzon giant cloud rat is known for spending much of its time in treetops, hence its common name ‘cloud rat’. These nocturnal rodents at Night Safari were greeted with an evening treat. Keepers tucked the rats’ favourite nuts and vegetables into Lunar New Year themed enrichment devices shaped like firecrackers to encourage them to forage.

Not to be left out, the dumbo rats also got their Lunar New Year treats over at Singapore Zoo’s Rainforest Kidzworld. Dumbo rats are domesticated forms of the brown rat, named after the fictional character Dumbo for their large ears positioned on the sides of their heads.

Through a host of education and craft activities, visitors can learn more about the exceptional traits of rodents which today make up about 40 per cent of all mammal species on earth. Lion dance performances, mascot appearances and Zoodiac Predictions for the Year of the Rat are also lined up across all four wildlife parks during the Lunar New Year period from 25 Jan to 8 Feb 2020.

The dumbo rats were out sniffing around their Lunar New Year themed surroundings for snacks at Singapore Zoo’s Rainforest Kidzworld.
