Answer the call of the wild to fight the deadliest monster

25 SEP 2018
In its third year, Wildlife Reserves Singapore’s Go Green for Wildlife campaign rallies its guests and animal ambassadors to combat deadly plastic pollution. This year’s theme – Fight the Deadliest Monster – bolsters the message from previous years: to reduce single-use plastics by refusing straws and advocating the bring-your-own (BYO) movement, to use refillable bottles, reusable shopping bags and reusable containers and utensils for takeaway.

In the month of October, Singapore Zoo’s Sea Lion Pedro will be a Go
Green for Wildlife ambassador encouraging guests to use refillable bottles
instead of disposable bottles. Catch him or fellow Sea Lion Phillip at
Singapore Zoo’s Splash Safari Show at 10.00am or 5.00pm daily.

River Safari’s Luke the Great White Pelican will be a Go Green for
Wildlife ambassador in October, advocating the use of reusable bags instead of
single-use plastic bags. Catch him during River Safari’s Once Upon a River show
at 11.30am and 4.30pm and additional shows at 2.30pm on weekends.

Jurong Bird Park’s Go Green for Wildlife ambassador is none other than
Ippy the Scarlet Macaw, who will be egging on guests to refuse straws and use
reusable cups and containers for takeaway food and drinks. Catch Ippy at Jurong
Bird Park’s High Flyer Show at 11.00am and 3.00pm daily.

Plastic pollution is responsible for the deaths of over a million animals a year. The animals of WRS parks have joined in on the eco-movement in a bid to save their wild brethren as Go Green for Wildlife ambassadors. Watch Singapore Zoo’s dynamic Sea Lion duo Phillip and Pedro, River Safari’s Luke the Great White Pelican and Jurong Bird Park’s Ippy the Scarlet Macaw educate guests on how to reduce their personal single-use plastic waste.

Embark on the eye-opening Fight the Deadliest Monster Trail through River Safari and Jurong Bird Park and partake in engaging activities at the Fight the Deadliest Monster Booth in Singapore Zoo to learn how different types of plastic waste from straws to plastic bags adversely affect various animals like fish, birds and otters. Participate in the booth activities or take the pledge to reduce disposable plastic usage at each station and complete the trail to bring home a complimentary story book, “Little Otter, Litter Trouble” published by the WRS Education team with support from the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism.

As part of efforts to involve youth and the community on the sustainability movement, WRS tapped into young minds by collaborating with Temasek Polytechnic to conduct a Sustainability Design Competition open to all ITE and polytechnic students. The competition implored contestants to propose innovative ways to re-think the rampant use of disposable take-away containers in Singapore. The proposed solutions ranged from creative physical products to out-of-the-box advocacy campaigns and processes, showcasing the spirit of innovation and its potential application in solving our ecological problems. The winning green ideas will be proudly exhibited in Jurong Bird Park and River Safari.

Children are the future stewards for the environment and a sustainable future may well lie in their hands. To enlist their help to spread the message about sustainable living, children are entitled to free entry to learn how to fight the deadly plastic waste monster. In October, local residents between the ages of three to 12 years old enter Jurong Bird Park, River Safari and Singapore Zoo for free with every paying adult.
