Singapore Zoo's animal icon Ah Meng turns eight

08 MAR 2019
Singapore Zoo’s animal icon Ah Meng the Sumatran orangutan turns eight today. To celebrate, she enjoyed a cool birthday treat – a colourful fruit ice pop lovingly prepared by her human carers and a crowd of adoring fans singing her a birthday song. Over a thousand online followers joined the party via Facebook Live on Wildlife Reserves Singapore’s Facebook page.

Ah Meng relished the icy treat filled with her favourite fruits including pieces of mango, plum and grapes. The dessert made for a refreshing snack and presented Ah Meng with the challenge of getting to the fruits encased in the ice as a form of food-based enrichment.

Since being crowned as Singapore Zoo’s animal icon on 26 February 2016, Ah Meng has been a crowd favourite during guest photography sessions and Singapore Zoo’s award-winning animal engagement programme – Jungle Breakfast with Wildlife. Through these programmes, Ah Meng serves as an ambassador for her species and other threatened animals, helping to educate guests about the plight of their wild counterparts. Beyond these activities, Ah Meng can be seen swinging about in the trees or chilling out on a hammock in the free-ranging orangutan exhibit.

Cheeky Ah Meng does not seem too keen on sharing her birthday treat with her playmate Putra. The celebration took place during the daily orangutan token feeding and photography session at 11.00am, where visitors get the opportunity to take photos and learn more about these precious animals.
