The Sumba Eclectus
Different Yet The Same
Male and female eclectus parrots look so different that they were once thought to be separate species. Males are predominantly green; females are red or purplish red.
In the parrot family, they are unusual for their extreme sexual dimorphism (different appearance between male and female).
Their common name `eclectus’ was derived from the word `eclectic’ which refers to `a wide variety’.
Only On Sumba Island
Apart from their extreme sexual dimorphism, eclectus parrots are also unique in that they have rather fine, hair-like plumage on their neck and abdomen.
There are nine subspecies of eclectus parrots; the Sumba eclectus is found only on Sumba Island in Indonesia.
Due to trapping for the pet trade and habitat degradation, it is endangered with just 1,000 to 2,500 birds in the wild.
Penthouse Nester
The Sumba eclectus forages in coastal scrub, plantations and forests. However, it only nests in natural cavities found on very large trees that are difficult for predators to climb. Nest sites are shrinking due to the selective logging of these forest giants.
Females compete for tree hollows. Successful females signal their ownership by prominently sitting outside their cavities to attract the males.
