Lady

Lady is one of four Southern Cassowaries at Bird Paradise and is immediately recognisable by her prominent orange casque, which tilts slightly to the right. Around familiar keepers, she can be calm and approachable — although interactions generally happen according to her preferences rather than theirs.

One keeper recalls a memorable moment during a routine shower session when Lady unexpectedly approached close enough to allow contact with her casque. For a cassowary, this counts as a fairly significant endorsement.

Like all cassowaries, Lady carries a large casque atop her head, though its exact purpose remains uncertain. Current theories suggest it may regulate its body temperature in hot, tropical environments or protect the head while moving through dense rainforest vegetation.

Whatever its function, the casque remains one of the bird’s most striking features — giving Lady an unmistakable silhouette.

Cassowaries are classified as Least Concern globally, but the Australian population is considered Endangered due to vehicle strikes, habitat clearing and dog attacks.

Considered as a keystone species in Australia, cassowaries are irreplaceable as they are the only animals capable of dispersing the seeds of over 70 rainforest plant species, many of which cannot regenerate without passing through a cassowary's gut first. Lady's forest, if she were in it, would grow because of her.
