Narnia

Narnia was born on 26 January 2012 and was hand-raised by his care team at Night Safari. As a young animal, he experienced a serious illness that required intensive veterinary care and close monitoring.

Following treatment and recovery, he gradually regained full health and has since grown into a calm, deliberate adult. Today, he moves through his habitat each evening with the measured pace typical of a nocturnal forest species that sees little reason to hurry for anyone.

Having been hand-raised, Narnia is particularly accustomed to familiar human interaction and responds noticeably differently to keepers he knows well. Calm voices and steady routines appear to settle him, while unfamiliar situations are approached rather more cautiously.

Before entering new spaces, he is often observed pausing at the threshold to scent the air and assess his surroundings carefully before proceeding. It is a very binturong way of making decisions: slowly, thoroughly, and entirely on his own terms.

Narnia spends much of the daytime resting and becomes most active in the evening, when he moves through his habitat scent-marking and exploring. He tends to engage more readily with familiar keepers while remaining more reserved around unfamiliar individuals.

Like other binturongs, he produces a natural scent from glands near the base of the tail that is frequently compared to buttered popcorn — an oddly charming detail for an arboreal carnivore, though apparently perfectly normal from the binturong’s perspective.
