Pumba

Pumba was born on 23 May 2012 and is now the longest-serving California sea lion at Singapore Zoo’s Splash Safari. Over the years, he has developed a number of recognisable habits. During morning sessions, he blows bubbles underwater to attract the attention of his keepers.

When gates open, he can often be found resting his chin on the rocks at the water’s edge, observing proceedings with considerable interest. He is also highly vocal — barking, growling, and occasionally roaring towards fellow sea lions Pedro and Thiago.

And then, of course, there are the fish. Although, judging by his enthusiasm, one suspects the water itself may still be his favourite part.

As a younger sea lion, Pumba was noticeably more cautious than expected. Moving calmly from his den to the presentation area took time, patience, and several weeks of gradual conditioning with one dedicated keeper.

Eventually, he completed the route confidently and without hesitation — a seemingly small achievement that, in animal care terms, represented a rather important milestone.

Today, Pumba voluntarily participates in a remarkable range of husbandry and medical behaviours, including teeth brushing, blood collection, ultrasounds, X-rays, and eye examinations — all conducted without sedation through positive reinforcement training.

He is also currently learning to “smile” on cue for presentation and photography purposes. Whether he fully understands the assignment remains unclear. But he does appear to enjoy the attention.

The marine ecosystem in which California sea lions are found faces escalating threats from pollution, climate change, entanglement in fishing gear, and overfishing which means prey depletion for marine life. 

Pumba's presence is a reminder that the ocean is full of animals with personalities, preferences and relationships, and that protecting the sea means protecting them. Every show he performs is an argument for that ocean, made with his whole heart.
