We rely on Earth’s natural resources to meet our consumption needs. Sadly, the demand is depleting raw materials faster than they can be regenerated. The aggressive search for more raw materials has endangered wildlife habitats, and the environment is increasingly being polluted by improperly disposed waste.

To reduce our dependence on raw materials and help to mitigate the rate at which they are used, Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) has adopted ongoing reusing and recycling initiatives across our park operations.

Our initiatives

Recycling

We make it easy for visitors to recycle in our parks with our conveniently placed recycling bins. We also provide e-waste recycling bins to ensure electronic products are disposed of in a safe and proper manner, and chemical elements can be retrieved to be reused.

Guests are encouraged to dispose of paper, plastic and aluminium waste into our recycling bins located conveniently throughout our parks.

Staff and guests can also safely dispose of any used electronic waste such as wires, mobile phones and batteries, which may contain traces of highly hazardous chemical elements such as mercury, sulphur and cadmium. Our e-waste bins are designed to dispose of these electronic products in a safe and proper manner, and at the same time, help retrieve and reuse the chemical elements.

Reusing materials for enrichment

Our animals get to join in the fun too. Here at WRS, our talented zoology team creates animal enrichment objects in-house from old and donated materials. These animal enrichment toys and devices are used to engage our animals and encourage their innate sense of exploration, keeping them physically and mentally healthy!

  • Used live Christmas trees donated by households and commercial entities in Singapore were given to our animals for scent stimulation and play.
  • Fire hoses previously used by the SCDF are made into hammocks, beds and play cubes.
  • Gunnysacks donated by coffee companies or cafes are used to stimulate creativity in orangutans and chimpanzees, and also used by these animals as blankets at night.
  • Used tyres from our trams and buggies are turned into enrichment tools.
  • Bamboo stems from leftover or overgrown bamboo in our parks are turned into animal enrichment feeders.

Other daily initiatives

We also practice recycling and reusing in other daily park operations to reduce as much waste as possible.

  • Used cooking oil is sent for conversion into biodiesel
  • Newspapers, cardboard boxes and shredded paper are used for animal bedding
  • Suitable leaves from pruned plants are used in animal fodder
  • Loose tree logs and branches are recycled for exhibit structures and planter curbs

Join us in going green!

Reusing and recycling starts at home. Adopt recycling best practices in your daily life or give used products and materials a new lease of life. Just a few simple steps can help preserve the natural habitat around us.

Dispose recyclable materials such as paper, metal cans, plastic and glass into recycling bins.

Clean out recyclables before depositing them into recycling bins. Food waste contamination is one of the biggest obstacles in recycling.

Drop off used electronic products at e-waste recycling points located in Singapore Zoo, Jurong Bird Park, as well as community centres and schools all across Singapore.

Look out for products made from recycled or repurposed materials when shopping.

Instead of throwing out used belongings, bring them to stores or charity organisations to help someone in need.

Let the recycling games begin!
