True Beauty
Known locally as “Jalak Bali”, the Bali myna has also been called Rothschild's myna or Bali starling.
Standing at a height of up to 25cm, its white plumage is decorated with black tips on its wings and tail, and striking blue skin around its eyes.
Safety In Numbers
Young Bali mynas often gather in groups to locate food and watch out for predators. Using tree tops for cover, they usually only descend to ground for a drink, or to search for nesting materials.
Trapped By Trade
Victims of their own striking plumage and beautiful songs, Bali mynas are nearly extinct in the wild due to poaching for illegal pet and wildlife trades.
This is further compounded by the sheer rarity of the species, as they are only found in Bali.
Back From The Brink
By 1990, rampant poaching had reduced the wild population of Bali mynas to around 15 birds, dropping to a record low of just 6 in 2001.
Despite repeated setbacks from ongoing trapping, conservationists have continued efforts to reintroduce these birds. With our support, their vision of seeing flocks return to Bali’s skies lives on.

Saving Bali Mynas For Over 30 Years
Our involvement in saving the Bali myna from extinction spans over three decades, from 1989 to present day.
It began with us caring for the Bali myna in Jurong Bird Park, to subsequently partnering Begawan Foundation and expanding our conservation impact of the species in the wild.

Community-driven Conservation
With our support, notable project outcomes include the enactment of local laws banning Bali myna trapping, with strict penalties for offenders.
Through the Madhusuara Breeders Association, community breeders have successfully fledged 18 chicks for release.
Villagers assist with monitoring, while nest boxes and cameras help track and support breeding, offering insights into the birds' nesting behaviour.

Empowering Through Education
Raising awareness and fostering connections are crucial to wildlife conservation.
Our funding for education programmes focused on Bali mynas has reached over 2,000 students across six villages, empowering these children to help protect the species.
Additionally, the establishment of a local law prohibiting the trapping of Bali mynas and other protected wildlife plays a vital role in securing their future.
