Philippine Spotted Deer

Rainforest Wild ASIA has welcomed its first baby — a Philippine spotted deer fawn born in February 2025 to first-time parents “Helge” and “Helen”!

It’s a boy, and already showing signs of being as brave and confident as his father.

Now a family of three, their story highlights how human care supports the conservation of threatened species. Spot the fawn and his parents in the Canopy during your visit!

Also called the Visayan spotted deer or Prince Alfred’s deer, the Philippine spotted deer is a small, endangered species found in the rainforests of Panay and Negros.

Once widespread across other Visayan Islands, it is now one of the world's most endangered deer species.

It is also one of four endemic deer species found in the Philippines, the others being the Philippine deer, Philippine mousedeer, and Calamian deer.

The Visayan deer, despite being short-legged, is the largest endemic deer species in the Philippines. Adults reach up to 130cm in length and 60kg in weight.

Its deep brown coat features an “A”-pattern of beige spots, with cream underparts and white fur on the chin and lower lip – this easily distinguishes it from other species of deer in the Philippines.
