What makes it unique
Welcome to The Outback!
The moment you step into this aviary, your senses are bombarded by sounds, sights and scents.
Welcoming you are flocks of colourful birds against the backdrop of an Australian outback landscape dotted with eucalyptus trees, cave paintings on rock walls and giant termite mounds.
Parrot Parade
Early explorers hailed Australia as the ‘land of parrots’. There are more parrot species in New South Wales alone than in Asia and Africa combined! Our parrots come in a riot of colours, filling the air with joyous whistles and squawks.
Watch for the fluffed-up displays of the red-tailed black cockatoo and the flamboyant hairdo of the Major Mitchell’s cockatoo.
Enchanting Encounters
As you stroll the elevated walkways, you simply cannot miss the begging antics of the magpie goose. Don’t forget to search the shadows for the funky but shy crested pigeon.
Gaze skywards to admire the breath-taking flight of our Aussie beauties. No visit is complete without observing our birds squabbling over a shared meal in the many scattered feeders.
Being seedeaters, cockatoos have large beaks with which seeds can be dehusked efficiently. The action of the bill and tongue has been likened to the chewing action of ruminants.
