Zane
Zane's Story
Still As A Statue
Zane was born on 1 January 2006 and is one of the longest-standing residents at Bird Paradise. In the mornings, he is often found standing motionless at a preferred rooftop perch overlooking the habitat.
Guests frequently mistake him for a sculpture at first glance — an understandable error, given the shoebill’s extraordinary ability to remain perfectly still for long periods. Usually, the confusion ends when he blinks.
A Bird Of Very Specific Preferences
Zane follows a fairly consistent routine. Mornings are often spent on elevated perches, while afternoons are typically quieter and more secluded. He generally prefers distance from both keepers and other birds, moving away when approached too closely.
His large shoe-shaped bill — often compared to a Dutch clog — gives him a rather imposing profile, although from certain angles, his facial expression appears considerably less intimidating. He is also selective with food items, preferring smaller fish under approximately 15 centimetres in length. Standards, clearly, are important.
Progress, On Zane’s Terms
Because Zane is naturally cautious, even small moments of trust are considered significant by his care team. One keeper recalls a memorable occasion when Zane voluntarily approached for a hand-fed fish — a rare interaction for a bird that generally prefers maintaining personal space.
The team continues to work gradually on recall training and hand-feeding behaviours through patient conditioning, always allowing Zane to proceed at his own pace. Which, for a shoebill, is usually the correct pace anyway.
Why He Matters
Shoebills are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN, with an estimated 3,300–5,300 remaining in the wild across the freshwater swamps of Central and East Africa. Habitat drainage for agriculture and human settlement is shrinking their world rapidly.
Zane's presence at Bird Paradise gives guests a rare encounter with a species that most people have never even heard of, and such encounters are often the beginning of everything.
